Do you know how to manage your energy so you have more time?
We all know that there is a vast amount of information out there on time management and how to reorganise your life in just 7, 21 or 30 days. But is this really possible? Well maybe it is; have you really stopped to think about time and can you really have more time to do the things you really want to do? After all we all have the same 24 hours in every day, 7 days in a week and 365 days (unless like this year 366) in a year, yet a number of us achieve so much more than others, why is this?
How can you really create extra time?
Easy really isn’t it? Maybe we just need to sleep less, get up earlier and cram more into the day? Well if it was that easy we would all be doing it right? Wrong, we would manage that for a few days but eventually many of us would revert back to the same old routines, even though we promised ourselves that this time we would change. Apparently it is all down to what we choose to focus on, if we choose to focus on our energy rather than focusing on the clock it would become a little easier.
So where should we focus?
The key is to focus on when you are at your peak, when you perform at your best. When is the best time for you to tackle all those jobs we keep putting off? Are you a morning, afternoon or evening person? Do you have an energy slump mid-morning or in the afternoon? Or a real energy burst just before you should be going to bed! Really listen to your body and recognise when you are in a peak performance state and when you are not. Watch what you eat and drink and how that affects your energy levels, learn to really listen to the rhythm of your body. Then and only then will you be able to perform at your best.
Here’s a way to achieve more in less time.
How many of you have heard about the 90-minute rule? Tony Schwarts author of ‘Psychology of work’ states that “evidence indicates that few of us can maintain focus for more than 90 minutes” He like Nigel Botterill of the Entrepreneur’s Circle who’s book ‘Build your business in 90 minutes a day’ are real advocates of the 90-minute rule.
So why not start focusing and controlling your time better in the home, the office and anywhere else your energy goes. Because once you start focusing it is truly amazing how much you get done. Remember to turn the distractions off though! No Facebook, no emails, no phone calls just pure focus for 90 minutes each and every day and see how much you achieve.
To start with you can set an alarm to ensure you don’t go over time, check in with your energy levels after each 90-minute burst and see how you feel. Then get up go for walk, stretch your body and relax your mind ready for the next 90-minute burst of energy/focus and watch all those tasks disappear as you really do have more time as you will find you have stop wasting it.
Who said we can’t manage time? Of course you can, you just have to be creative with it.
