Are you fed up with setting goals but do it anyway?

Well join the rest of us, we all do it, don’t we this time of year? Everywhere we turn it is goal setting this and goal setting that. New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, to get fitter, to write that book, to stop drinking, to start going out with our friends more, to find a new job, a new love, to work more on the business rather than in the business or for some a whole new life. New Year is a great time to start something new, but for a many of us, we jump in with both feet and by the 15th January our resolve has left the building, along with our dreams of being a better version of ourselves.

Business man pointing the text: What are Your Goals?Again, sound familiar? Why ‘o’ why do we do this to ourselves time and time again, year in year out? Only to then believe we are failures, because we never achieved the goals we set out to achieve on the 1st of January. I know some of you do, before you start shouting and stop reading, but bear with us. This is about the ‘why’ the majority of us don’t achieve the success they are so very capable of.

 

‘Why’ we fail is simple. We set ourselves up to fail, we think goal setting is simple and if we write it down, hey presto we will achieve it. Plus and this is a big plus, for many of us the highs of Christmas celebrations and the reality of the bills coming in and the short dark days and long cold nights of January (if you live in the Northern hemisphere that is) all add up to us not being in the right frame of mind to even contemplating achieving our goals.

So what can you do about it? Goal setting is a great way to re-launch your life, goals are after all just our dreams with deadlines attached to them. But just like dreams maybe we set them too high that they scare us and hence why we don’t achieve them.

What if you decided to change how you set goals? Think about it, it makes sense right? So how can you change how you set your goals? The simple answers are always the best, don’t make them so big that they scare the living daylights out of you. See told you it was simple, make your ‘why’ the starting point.

Goal-setting-concept-diagram-on-white-board-SMART-Goals-16662880For me, my ‘why’ is to live a healthy and happy life, now to achieve that I have to break it down into smaller achievable goals. I could put down I want to lose 2 stone, I want to be the fittest I can be and I want to have a 7 figure business income in 2016. Great but guess what, just like the last few years I won’t achieve them because I need to break it down into smaller tasks. This is where my management experience comes into play, when everyone of my targets needed to be SMART:

S = Specific – get real clarity what is you want to do? If it is to lose weight, how much, by when and for what, make it a real goal, not a wish. To enable this you need to change your mindset, it has to become a ‘must

M = Measurable – think about how you can measure it weekly, with weight loss that easy but with others it is tricky, so spend real time thinking about how you can demonstrate this week in week out and what will it look like?

A = Achievable – How many of us have said I want to lose 2 stone by the end of the month? Is this really achievable, well maybe if you stop eating altogether and go on one of those fad detox diets. Well guess what you may achieve the result but will it be sustainable? As history shows, if we lose weight quickly it comes right back and with a few pounds more besides.

R = Realistic – a bit like achievable but with a dose of reality dropped in, if you want a 7 figure income from your business and you don’t have a product to sell or you don’t invest in the business, well guess what it won’t happen? That is a dream and like dreams the minute we wake up it’s gone.

T = Timely – This is where the clever bit comes in, if you break your goals down into specific, achievable, measurable and realistic statements with a daily, weekly or monthly target you get to see success and this is what keeps you going and leads to real success.

We all love to celebrate and we love nothing more than celebrating our own success. So when you are setting your goals this year and it really doesn’t matter when you start, the key is to make your goals SMART.
